Speech & Language Therapy
Our Speech and Language Therapists (SaLTs) provide support and sessions for all students in the school. The student’s communication needs are assessed and an appropriate intervention is provided. We use the wave model (Specialist, Targeted, Universal) and the aim is to make sure that all students reach their speech, language and communication potential, regardless of their level of ability and preferred communication method.
The service is delivered on the principle that all students communication skills are best developed through interaction with the people who are most familiar with the students, and in their everyday situations and environments. There is also a strong focus on early identification and intervention.
We use a range of holistic approaches ranging from Attention Autism, Colourful semantics, Intensive Interaction, PECS and social skills groups. We also support students to communicate using high tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) such as Proloquo2go. We work collaborative with the class teams to identify students’ areas of need and ensure communication opportunities are embedded throughout the school day and in a range of settings The therapy team provides training and advice for parents/carers and staff, to create communication supportive environments and to support our students.
