Literacy

Pathway 2 and 3

At Key Stage 5 English is taught in class groups in a three-year cycle. Classes have two lessons per week. Topics include non-fiction forms and instructions, writing to persuade, story writing and Shakespeare.  Some classes follow a more life skills-based scheme of work where they practice their grammar, punctuation, comprehension skills as well as handwriting and letter formation and prepare for NCFE functional skills' accreditation.

Pathway 1

In the PH+ classes functional literacy is taught in class groups in a three-year cycle. Themes are used to offer a wide range of activities and these include myself, my community, the wider world and community and living things. Functional literacy is taught every day and is also incorporated into every learning area of the curriculum. All pupils have individual plans for literacy where they concentrate on personalised targets.
