Year of Mercy

Pope Francis proclaimed an ‘Extraordinary Jubilee Year’ which has ‘Mercy’ as its focus. It began on 8th December 2015 , The Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady’ and continues until the Feast of Christ the King on the 20th November 2016.

The Jubilee Year started with the opening of the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, which is usually bricked up. Pope Francis stated that the Biblical theme is ‘Be Merciful just as your Father is merciful’. He also said that the Holy Door will become ‘a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the Love of God who consoles, pardons and instills hope’. The opening of the Holy Door in St Peter’s will be followed by the opening of doors in cathedrals throughout the world.

During the Year of Mercy we are called to rediscover the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy. For more information and details from our own diocese please look at the Diocesan website here.
