The Winefride Tyrrell Award for Leadership

Sr Winefride Tyrrell was Headteacher of Guardian Angels School, Mile End from 1889 to 1899, when she left to become the Provincial of the English Province of the Servants of the Scared Heart based in Homerton, an order founded in 1866 by Fr. Victor Braun in Paris.

Sr Winefride had worked with our local Diocese as they could see then that not all children could be educated in mainstream schools and in 1901 the sisters opened Pield Heath House School..

In 1903, after splitting from the French congregation, under her leadership the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Chigwell) came into being.

Winefride Tyrrell died on 20th November 1916 at Pield Heath. At St John’s School in Chigwell a special Mass was held to mark the centenary of her death. On this 100 year anniversary the Winefride Tyrrell Award for Leadership was introduced in her memory and as a way of keeping the link between our schools established.
